ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; REVIEW #6: PAINTING A MINI

[En] We are in the home stretch about this warpaints article's series. Not so much to do yet, but a basic test is to paint a mini just using those colors. Even more I'm going to do something I never did before, combine metallics and non metallics to paint a carved armor.

Miniature's choice it's not casual, not the pretiest of the market, but it's just great to do this test, if everything goes fine, is because with this paints even this mini could look great, if not, is just that the mini is not beautiful enough, I can't loose :)

[En] First of all was to aply black primmer and then a white coat airbrushed but not so much color.

He usado aerógrafo para ello.
[En] Next step using greys and black was to paint a no metallic metal basecoat adding some volumes that doesn't exist on sculpt, I'm trying to add details to this mini with paint. It's not a perfect NMM, but i'm just looking for a working base. I used airbrush to do that.

[En] I added a couple of new volumes using normal brush and I started the carved work on the armor. In the background you can see the idea in wich is based on, but i'm going to do a easier work that in paper.

[En] As you can see freehand work is slow and laborious, I'm slowly painting new lines. So many painters first make a sketch before marking and finish it, but I try to paint it directly.

[En] You can see how miniature is becoming life even if freehand work is easier than in paper's concept.

[En] At this point I start to increase definition adding shadow outlines to separate volumes. This is going to add NMM feeling to armor even without light outlines.

[En] here we can see the freehand work finished in the back too, we can start the metal paints work. Until now, army painter warpains are working fine, painting straight lines with them is really easy, even using an old brush as I did.

[En] Now the complex work, I'm going to paint with glazes using metallic paints as if I was painting the armor from the beggining using the same steps as I did with the Halberd in the previous article, but looking for a transparent point in the paints. My idea is that you can see the freehand work trough this coat.

[En] Experiment was not good, but neither bad. I achieved that I was looking for, but paint is looking too matt, and once diluted, those paints looks granulated. Not something extrange, most brands works in the same way exactly, but doesn't look as good as I wanted.

[En] Inks work does not correct the matt looking, maybe because as I told you in previous articles, those inks are not shiny. I started too the light outlines work.

[En] I'm going to paint another detail that is not sculpted in the mini, a padded leather skirt, so I started with a brown basecoat.

[En] I drawed guidelines.

[En] I started to paint shadows as if volume really exists. I'm not goling to shade, I'm going to point, as I'm looking for leather texture, not clothes

[En] I did the same with light ad effects looks good enough

[En] painting face was complex, Volumes are weird and it has not so much detail, but even with that it looks very clean. I recognice that here, inks (wahses) were a big help

[En] I keep painting details until mini is finsihed

[En] I had to admit, even with that, that this is a weird mini to test paints. Almost all are metallics and other parts have drab brown colors. ¿how works other colors? and ¿if we mix them with other brands? I was lucky to have other mini as this one at home, so, this time mixing warpaints with other brands, I painted it too.

[En] Looking how those minis looks like once finished, I thin those paints work as least at a closest level as  more established brands in the miniature painting market. They cover better, but because of that they are a bit harded to blend. But instead, they have some better things than others.

Talking generaly, they have good color intensity, they cover very good, they are straight enought to paint freehands easily, they do not paste and color choice is good. in the other hand, each color has it's own finish, some of them very satin, other completely matt, and this is the biggest point to correct.

Talking about airbrushing, those are the paints designed to normal paint work that works better in my Infinity. Even more, they mix well with other brands as vallejo or citadel. Until now no one color becomes cut or decantes, but this is something we can notice long-term

Just another article left about this series! Hope they are being interesting for you.

ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; REVIEW #5: ADVANCED BASING

[En] If you followed my article's line about Army Painter, you sure remember that in my previous article #4 about metallics and inks, those last ones gave me mixed feelings as they looks more than a very good wash than an ink. As I told you I don't use washes I didn't know what to do whith them, but ... if I use them?

As I had my Dreadknight's base half done I decided to finish it using basically those inks and by the way add some advanced basing effects. Let's look how it went.

[En] First of all I want you to see how it looks in my palette. This one is red tone, i sed too purple tone, strong tone and dark tone. As you see it looks almost the same as any other ink.

[En] To give it an alien looking I added some bug's eggs that I tinted with washes. As you see, inks blend great, giving a good looking tone and without borders, but they don't shine. I did the spittle yarns with a hot glue gun touching one side and stretching to the other one.

[En] Combining red and purple tones in different rock parts I'm switching it's color. We can see perfectly ink's finish.

[En] I added a couple of bugs in the floor. I cutted them to integrate later using water affects as if they were buring themselves in mud

[En] to do water effect I applied first a cellophane dam. The dam is the most delicate part of a water effect because if you don't do it fine enought will filter and can spoil the whole base. In this case I'll use a fairly thick water from Ziterdes brand and this type of dam is the simplest that works fine with dense water, but does not work if very liquid.

[En] I aplied water, mixinig it 50:50 (it's one of the easier ones) and I tinted them using red tone, purple tone and strong tone, Y applied ink's dots in several parts of the surface and mixing them with not so much effort, so we get different water tones and looks like the background is churning. Those inks mix very good with artificial water.

[En] so it looks in this way once finished.

As i thought in the previous article, if you like washes and you don't want to complicate yourself diluting normal paints and you want instead a finished product, this could be your first choice.

Glazes are very easy to do too, and their finish is matt, not completely, just a little bit satin.

Definitely a good prodcut.

ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; REVIEW #4: METALLICS & INKS

[En] 4th article about Army Painter Warpaints. Slowly I'm taking the "touch" with them so I can do harder things. Today I'll show you a simple metall painting exercise on an Halberd.
I used "Gun Metal", "Shinning Silver", "Matt Black", "Oak Brown", "Matt White", "Dark tone" (Ink), "Strong tone" (Ink), y "Soft tone" (Ink), and "black primer" spray. Piece has not so many definition so painting work is a bit harder.

[En] First of all I primmed in black the piece. This is to increase deep and weight.

[En] Basecoat is a mixture of gun Metal with Black and Oak Brown. First light is just Gun Metal, I pointed transition to make me easier to blend it later

[En] Second lights are done adding slowly to mixture Shinning Silver.

Empieza a tener buena pinta.
[En] I painted shadows Using airbrush with matt black and Oak Brown. It starts to look great. By the way, detail paintintg with airbrush is easy with those paints.

[En] I painted a couple os scratches using black and a mixture of matt white & shinning silver. After that I aplied several ink glazes using first soft tone, then strong tone and finishing with dark tone. Last step is to outline with black and with the mixture of white & Shinning Silver.

Until now, this metal paints gave me very good feelings. They cover perfectly, color tone is a great choice, they blend fine and their consistency is very soft without lumps or specks. I didn't tried yet the golds, but those goes directly to my basic paints.

Inks in the other hand gave me mixed feeling.
They blend absolutely great, they have good color saturation and they leave no fence.
But they are matt, looks more like first line washes than inks. If you do not use washes, like me, and you look for a different finish in an ink because theyr shine, those are not useful for you.

If you are a washes fan, those could be your first choice. As I don't use them I can only compare with new cirtadel range that I tested on my analysis and those win by far, but I hear very good things about Vallejo's ones so we should test them face by face to be sure.

Again the best way to get your own conclusions is to test them by yourself. Soon more articles.
