Nemesis Dreadknight 2, Tribute to Franciuus

[Es] hace tiempo que Francesco Farabi es un gran amigo dentro del mundillo de la miniatura. todo aquél que le conozca sabe que no solo es un gran pintor y un gran Organizador de eventos (Monte San Savino debe gran parte de su éxito a la labor de Francesco), sino que además es una increíble persona, Todo esto ya lo dije hace unos días cuando publiqué el primer Servoterror, no estáis leyendo de nuevo el mismo post :)

Pues tras unos días he podido completar el segundo. En el primero que pinté no tenía mucho margen porque el cliente quería un homenaje a Francesco y tenía que ser SU servoterror, con algunos toques a mi estilo, pero ¿porque hacer un trabajo de locos una vez si puedes hacerlo dos? En el segundo tenía mucha más libertad, y como mejorar la pintura no era una opción porque llega un punto en que el esfuerzo invertido representa muy poca mejora (y el original ya esta al más alto nivel), la única opción era mejorar la escena, así que busqué un poco más de movimiento y con un par de efectos avanzados en el terreno ya lo tenemos.

[En] There was a while that Francesco Farabi is a great friend inside mianiture's world. Everyone that has the pleasure to meet him knows that he is not only a great painter or an even organizator (monte San Savino is as great as it is partialy because Francesco's work), in fact he is a great Person, I told you exactly that some days ago when I posted the first one, you are not reading the same post again :)

After a few days I could finish the second one. First one needed to fit as best as possible with original one just with my touch as customer wanted just a Francesco's tribute, but why do a crazy work once if you can become completely MAD doing it twice? I had lot of freedom on second one and as improve paintign was not an option because at one point lot of work means a very small improvement (and original one was alerady at best level) my only choice was to improve scene, so i look for some more movement and with a couple of advanced basing effects we have it.

ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; REVIEW #3: BASIC USE

[Es] ARMY PAINTER WARPAINTS: PRUEBA BASICA DE USO

Como en artículos anteriores, voy a seguir profundizando en las características de las pinturas de Army Painter como alternativa para los pintores de miniaturas que les gusta probar cosas nuevas con frecuencia.

En este caso voy a darles un uso básico sobre una peana de roca imprimada con spray negro de Army Painter.

[En] ARMY PAINTER WARPAINTS: BASIC USE TEST

As in previous articles, I’ll keep testing more in deep the Army Painter paint’s characteristics as an alternative to miniature painters who wants to check new available tools frecuently.

In this case, I’m going to give them a basic use over a rock base primed with black army painter spray

[Es] Voy a utilizar los pinceles de la caja de inicio MEGA PAINT SET, asimismo, utilizaré uno de mis aerógrafos, el Evolution que tengo más gastado. 

El diluyente es mi mezcla personal que consiste en 80% agua destilada, 10% limpiacristales, 5% Tamiya thinner, 5 % Vallejo airbrush cleaner

[En] I’m going to use starter’s box MEGA PAINT SET brushes, at the same time I’ll use one of my airbrush, the oldest one, an Evolution. 

Thinner is my personal mix that is 80% distilled water, 10% glass cleaner, 5% Tamiya thinner, 5% Vallejo airbrush cleaner.

[Es] Los colores utilizados son todos de la MEGA PAINT SET, he usado los colores: Uniform, grey, Ash grey, Leather Brown, Monster Brown, Oak Brown, Hydra turquoise, Necrotic Flesh, Desert Yellow y Matt black.

[En] All colors used are from MEGA PAINT SET, I used: Uniform, grey, Ash grey, Leather Brown, Monster Brown, Oak Brown, Hydra turquoise, Necrotic Flesh, Desert Yellow & Matt black.

[Es] Comienzo trabajando con aerógrafo para dar los colores básicos. Comienzo con Monster Brown + Leather Brown, La mezcla es más o menos al 50% con mi mezcla de diluyente.

[En] I start working with airbrush to paint basic colors. I started with a 50% mix of Monstaer brown and Leather brown, Mixture is diluted in my thinner 50-50 more or less

[Es] Solamente dos capas después el resultado es evidente. Para los no familiarizados con el aerógrafo, decir que es un poder de cubrición bastante alto.

[En] Just a couple of coats after we can see how changed. For those not so used to airbrushing, that is a very high covering power.

[Es] Repito el proceso usando Uniform grey en las zonas de roca, dejando la mezcla anterior visible en las zonas más arenosas.

Hasta ahora no he tenido atascos y la pintura fluye bien, cuesta limpiar el aerografo un poco más que con Vallejo o Citadel gama anterior, pero también cubre mejor.

[En] I repeated the step using Uniform grey in those rock zones, leaving visible the previous work on those Sandy zones.

Until now I hadn't stocks and paint flows very well. Cleaning airbrush it's a bit harder tha using Vallejo or Citadel old range, but it covers better too.

[Es] Usando pincel seco y combinando distintos marrones y grises resalto la superficie para darle un aspecto más rugoso y pronunciado.

[En] Using dry brush using different Brown and grey tones I standed out surface making it rugged and steep

[Es] aplico en las zonas arenosas un lavado de marrón y negro, varias veces, y en las zonas de roca solamente de negro, luego repito el pincel seco suavemente, con esto incremento el contraste. Luego repito el proceso completo para suavizar.

[En] I applied several washes with Brown and black in the Sandy zones, and just with black were rocks, and then I repeated softy the dry brush to increase contrast. Then I repeated all steps to make it bit softer.

[Es] Por último perfilo con un gris y negro las zonas más internas y con una mezcla muy iluminada de los dos colores principales las aristas exteriores para afilar la roca dándole un aspecto más peligroso, Por desgracia, en las fotos no se aprecia bien, aunque en vivo el resultado es obvio.

[En] At last I outlined with grey and black the inner parts and with a very lightened mixture of the two original colors the external  edges to make rock sharpen and more dangerous. Unfotunately, pics do not show very well that work, even if in hand it's pretty obvious.

[Es] si colocamos la figura sobre la peana podemos hacernos una idea de cual será el efecto final una vez añadamos otros elementos de escenografía a la roca, cosa que haremos más adelante.

[En] If we put the miniature on the base we can get an idea of the future finished looking once we add the other scenery elements, that we'll do another day.

[Es] Tras este proceso puedo decir que la primera impresión de las pinturas es bastante buena, antes de publicar conclusiones quiero hacer alguna prueba más exigente, lo veremos pronto en el blog. 

Si me gustaría destacar que algunas pinturas son más espesas que otras y el acabado varía un poco de completamente mate a ligeramente satinado según el color. No es algo muy raro, otras marcas como Vallejo también tiene este problema, y aquellas como Andrea que te garantizan un acabado mate tienden a agrisar.

[En] After that step by step I can say that first impression of those paints is great, before posting some conclusions I wanna make test more stric, we will see soon on the blog.

I want to mark that some colors are thicker than others, and finish varies from completely matt to bit satin in different colors. This is not exclusively to Army Painter, other Brands as Vallejo have the same issue, and other LIke Andrea that are absolutely matt tends to grey.

ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; REVIEW #2: BLACK COMPARISON TEST

[ES] Una de las cosas más buscadas por el modelista de alto nivel es una pintura negra que sera versátil, fácil de usar, mate, opaca, que funcione a pincel y aerógrafo y sobre todo, MUY negra, el Santo Grial de la pintura de miniaturas.

Cada pintor tiene su preferida, pero estoy convencido de que al no existir una sola que cumpla todos los requisitos, todos tenemos más de una en nuestra mesa.  Creo que una buena curiosidad será comparar el negro de Army Painter con algunos de los colores que yo tengo en mi mesa.

Voy a dejaros ver el video antes de nada, para que así, cada uno pueda sacar sus propias conclusiones sin influenciarse de mi opinión. No obstante, la mejor prueba es probarlas vosotros mismos.

[EN] One of the most wantedthings  by high level modeller is an opaque black paint that will be versatile, easy to use, matt, that could be used in a brush and airbrush and above all, very black, the Holy Grail of miniature painting.

Each painter has his favorite, but I am convinced that no one accomplish all the requirements, we all have more than one at our table. I think should be good tocompare the Army Painter Matt black with some colors that I have on my desk.

I will leave you see the video first of all, so each one  can get their own conclusions without my opinion's influence. However, the best test is to try them yourself.

[Es] Como podéis ver, el color negro que nos ofrece Army Painter está a la altura de las mejores pinturas disponibles en el mercado hoy en día. ¿es mejor? No sabría deciros, eso depende del gusto de cada uno. No supone una mejora drástica respecto a otras mercas, pero tampoco se queda atras. Mi sensación es que se trata de una mezcla de Vallejo y Andrea con muchas cosas buenas de ambos y pocas cosas malas.

[En] As you can see, Black color Army Painter offers us is at the same level as best paint avaiable on market today. Is it better? I can't say that, deppendes on everyone's taste. It is not a remarkable improvement compared with other brands, but it's not worst that them. My feeling is that it's like a mix of Vallejo and Andrea with so many good things from them and not so much bad things.

ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; REVIEW #1: UNBOXING

[Es] INTRODUCCION

Ser pintor de miniaturas profesional implica entre otras cosa, no conformarse con cualquier material de trabajo, estoy constantemente probando cosas nuevas en busca de cualquier cosa que mejore mi producto. 

Muchos sabéis que mi base de pintura hace tiempo era la gama anterior de Citadel (renovada hace poco, de la cual hice una review que podéis leer en el blog), después de ese cambio forzoso, poco a poco las nuevas Citadel fueron dejando paso a Vallejo Model Color como mi base de pintura, utilizo mucho aerógrafo y si bien mi primera impresión de las nuevas Citadel fue buena, con el tiempo esa imagen se ha ido empobreciendo un poco, siguen pareciéndome excelentes a pincel, pero su uso prolongado en el aerógrafo no acaba de llenarme.

Hace poco cayeron en  mis manos unos botes de Army Painter (ya lo usaba para imprimar en spray), y la verdad es que me gustaron bastante, por lo que me hice con una caja de inicio para testearlas.

[En] INTRODUCTION

Being profesional miniature painter means that I can’t settle with whatever working material, I’m always looking for new things that could improve my product.

Most of you know that some time ago my paints base were Citadel old range (you can read in this blog a review about new range), after that change, I switched slowly to Vallejo Model Color as my base, I use airbrush so much and if my first impression about Citadel new range was good, with time and intense use, that idea was changing slowly. Don’t misunderstand me, they are pretty excellent with brush, but I don’t like so much their airbrush taste.

Not so much time ago I get a couple of pots of Army Painter (I already used it to prime with spray) and I liked them a lot, so I managed to get a starting box to test them

[ES] ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; VISTA PRELIMINAR

Esta caja de inicio es ideal para comenzar en el hobby, a priori la elección de colores es bastante acertada, por supuesto todos tenemos colores fetiche y es imposible que estén todos en una caja así, pero si estas empezando tiene todo lo necesario para pintar casi cualquier color: Pinturas base, con varios tonos de cada color, tintas y colores metálicos, así como un barniz y varios pinceles, además de un par de folletos.

[En] ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; OVERVIEW

This starter box is great to start in the hobby, First look seems that have a very good colors choice. Obviously as we all have our fetish colors, it’s impossible to have all of them in a starter box like this one, but if this is your first box you’ll have almost all you’ll need to paint any color: some base colors with some different tones for each color, inks and metallic paints, and a varnish, some brushes and a couple of booklets

[Es] ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; ABRIENDO LA CAJA

La caja en si es de cartón de buena calidad, algo más gordo y resistente de lo habitual en estos casos, no mucho, pero si un poco. Dentro encontramos 4 blisters de plástico grandes, los dos de arriba con encajes para los botes de pintura, y los dos de abajo sin ellos, con los botes dentro junto a los pinceles y los folletos.

En total son 42 botes de pintura de diversos tipos, 3 pinceles, un folleto publicitario y unos tutoriales de pintura de iniciación, con muy buena calidad de impresión y nuevamente, al menos en el caso de los tutoriales, papel de calidad ligeramente superior a lo habitual.

[En] ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; OPENING BOX

Box itself is built in good quality cardboard, little bit thicker and resistant than usual in this kind of boxes, not so much but a bit. Inside we can see 4 big blisters, upside 2 with holes to fit the pots and downside ones without them with pots inside with the brushes and the booklets.

There are a total amount of 42 paint pots of different kinds, 3 brushes, a products chart and a starting tutorial booklet, with very good printing quality, and again, at least in the tutorials booklet, quality paper a bit better than usual.

[ES] ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; CONTENIDO DETALLADO

Fijándonos en el contenido con detalle podemos apreciar varias gamas de color, aunque algún tono es intermedio y puede ser algo impreciso de clasificar. 

La más básica de todas son 4 colores, dos de la gama de los grises así como el blanco y el negro. Si nos fijamos, algunos colores ponen “100% match”; esta referencia indica que este color coincide al 100% con el color en spray de imprimación del mismo nombre. En la práctica yo solo he comprobado esto con el negro, y si bien el color es exacto, el acabado del spray es más satinado.

[En] ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; DETAILED CONTENT

Looking in detail to content we can see several color ranges, even if some tones are intermediate so could be somewhat imprecise to classify.

Basic one has 4 colors, two in the grey scale plus black and white. We can see some colors with the “100% match” label; This is telling us that this color fits with the spray color with the same name. I only tested this for now with black, and even color tone is exactly the same, spray is a bit more satin

[Es] La siguiente gama son los  azules, con 6 tonos diferentes la variedad es enorme, ofreciéndonos múltiples posibilidades, además la elección de tono es bastante buena, con diferencias sutiles pero tonos bien escogidos.

[En] Next range are the blues, with 6 different tones you can have a huge variety, offering so many possibilities, even more, the tone choices is fair good with subtle differences but good choices.

[Es] La gama de verdes es algo escasa, pero es cierto que cubre todos los tonos que yo suelo usar, así que para mí, con estos 4 es suficiente.

[En] Green range is a bit small, but it’s true that has all tones I used to use, so for me, those 4 are enough

[Es] La gama de rojos incluye 2 colores intermedios, un purpura (entre azul y rojo) y un rojo amarronado (Chaotic red), así como 2 rojos y un naranja. Echo de menos un magenta.

[En] Red range includes 2 intermediate tones, a purple (beetween blue and red) and a brownish red (Chaotic red), as 2 red tones and an orange. I miss a magenta tone.

[Es] la gama de marrones y carnes es bastante amplia, hay dos tonos de marrón claro muy parecidos entre si (Leather brown y Monster brown), mientras que echo de menos un marrón claro más saturado tipo siena tostada

[En] Brown and flesh range is big, there are 2 brown tones too close between them (Leather Brown and Monster Brown), and I miss a clear brown more saturated like burnt sienna

[Es] Para la gama de amarillos y ocres hay colores bastante interesantes y que no son fáciles de obtener por mezclas, pero me hubiese gustado un mostaza

[En] In the yellow and ochres range there are very interesting tones not so easy to get mixing, but I whould like to have a moustard tone.

[ES] La gama de tintas es muy amplia, aún no las he probado, pero a simple vista parecen todas muy oscuras, un par de tintas muy intensas y claras hubiesen sido un gran aporte

[En] Inks range is very big. I did not tested them yet, but in a first look they are all very dark, a couple of very intense clear inks should be a great adition

[Es] Para la gama de metálicos, con 5 colores y tintas es más que suficiente,  yo me apaño con 3 normalmente

[En] in the metallics range, using those 5 colors and inks is much more tan enough, I used to paint only with 3.

[Es] Mirando la carta de colores disponibles que podemos encontrar en el folleto, parece que son más que suficientes para casi cualquier cosa, muy variados y cubren casi todo el espectro.

[En] Looking the avaiable color’s chart that we can find in the booklet, seems that they are enough to paint almost everything, lot of variety and they covers almost all the entire spectrum

[ES]ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; PINCELES

Esta caja incluye tres pinceles, dos de ellos parecen de pelo natural y el de pincel seco aparenta ser sintético, son de mango triangular, y aunque no traen numeración, parecen ser un nº1 y un 000 o 5/0

[En] ARMY PAINTER MEGA PAINT SET; BRUSHES

This box includes 3 brushes, two of the looks like natural hair ones, while dry brush looks like sintetic, they have a triangular handle and even they are not numerated, looks like a N 1 and a 000 or 5/0

[Es] Comparandolos con los pinceles que uso habitualmente parecen de Buena calidad, pero no alcanzan el nivel de un pincel profesional como un Windsor & Newton Serie 7 (que cuestan alrededor de 14 € cada uno). Yo uso los números 1 y 0 para pintar.

[En] Comparing them with brushes I used to have looks like good quality, but not as good as a profesional brush like a Windsor & Newton series 7 (that cost around 14 € each one). I use numbers 1 and 0 to paint.

[Es] Se puede ver que la punta del Windsor & Newton es más compacta y uniforme, además de más precisa.

[En] We can see that Windsor & Newton brush tip is more compact and uniform, more precise too.

[ES] ARMY PAINTER BOX SET; CONCLUSIONES

Aunque esto es solamente un open box, la primera impresión es bastante buena. Trae una buena cantidad de colores, botes grandes de 18 ml. Los 3 pinceles para iniciarte en el hobby son de buena calidad, aunque si quieres progresar tendrás que buscar las marcas que usan los pintores profesionales (Windsor & Newton, Da Vinci, Raphael… O como mínimo un pincel de pelo natural de Marta Kolinsky)

Pronto continuaré con el análisis de estas pinturas haciendo múltiples test diferentes y pintando una miniatura con ellas.

Even this is only an open box, first impression is good enough. They have a good amount of colors, big pots of 18ml. 3 brushes that are pretty cool to introduce you in the hobby, but if you want to go further you’ll need to switch to a professional brand like Windsor & Newton, Da Vinci, Raphael… Or at least a good brush done with natural Kolinsky hair)

Soon I’ll keep testing those paint doing several things and painting a complete miniature with them.

[Es] hace tiempo que Francesco Farabi es un gran amigo dentro del mundillo de la miniatura. todo aquél que le conozca sabe que no solo es un gran pintor y un gran Organizador de eventos (Monte San Savino debe gran parte de su éxito a la labor de Francesco), sino que además es una increíble persona.

Por tanto ¿como decir que no a un encargo que consistía precisamente en pintar un servoterror basado en uno que el pintó? Es un trabajo muy duro, Francesco se caracteriza entre otras cosas por ser capaz de dibujar un freehand hasta en las pestañas de un 30mm, por tanto sabía que tendría que sudar mucho para completar la miniatura. Y he pintado no una sino dos! (La segunda aún no está completa del todo). Este trabajo me ha llevado un poco menos de dos meses, una barbaridad de esfuerzo equiparable a "Los Vengadores" que pinté el año pasado.

Evidentemente es casi igual al original, con algunos matices como un tono más azulado en la armadura (es intencionado) o una textura levemente distinta en el lienzo, así como una espada más espectral. El segundo que aún esta sin acabar es un poco más dinámico.

So ¿how could I say no to a commision that was just to paint a Dreadknight based on one Francesco's painted? It's a hard job, Francesco can paint a freehand in a 30mm's eyelash, so I was going to sweat a lot to finish it. And I painted not only one, but Two! (second one is not yet finished completely). This work took me just a bit less than 2 months, a big effort more or less as hard as my "Avengers" I painted last year.

Obviously is almost the same as original one, but little bit more blue (it is intentional) or a bit different texture on canvas, as a more espectral sword. Second one unfinished is a bit more dinamic.

Aspectos (No tan) evidentes de la pintura profesional (2)

[ES] EL DEPARTAMENTO DE CONTABILIDAD

Muchas veces cuando pensamos en el pintor profesional de miniaturas nos imaginamos a un tío encerrado en un cuartito friki desordenado y lleno de trastos y pinturas tiradas por todas partes pintando aislado todo el día sin levantas cabeza. Bien esto puede ser cierto en parte (he visto cuartos así, aunque mi estudio suele estar más o menos ordenado), pero hay muchas labores que pasan desapercibidas y ocupan gran parte de nuestro tiempo.

Una de ellas es el departamento de contabilidad, me explico, ser autónomo hoy en día en España significa dedicar parte de tu tiempo a trabajar para Hacienda, gratis, y encima pagar por hacerles el trabajo.

¿recordáis cuando os hablé del departamento de comunicación y os dije que dedicaba un 15% de mi tiempo a eso? pues otro 5% es a contabilidad. Evidentemente hacer facturas no lleva mucho tiempo, cuando dedicas entre 1 y 4 semanas a pintar una mini al final haces una o dos facturas al mes, y si eres un poco listo, tienes una plantilla excel que te hace casi todo el trabajo.

Contabilizar los gastos tampoco es mucho más problema, es cierto que hay que escanear y clasificar todos los tickets y facturas de proveedores (pinturas, peanas, pinceles, gastos de envío, alojamiento web, internet...). nuevamente una hoja excel con todo anotado es una gran ayuda.

Tampoco es problema la declaración trimestral (donde haces un balance del IVA pagado a tus proveedores y el cobrado a tus clientes y pagas la diferencia a hacienda, o, si tienes suerte y te sale a devolver, como a mi en enero-marzo de 2014, esperas pacientemente a que hacienda le de la gana de pagarte, por si os lo preguntáis, aún me deben 600 € de ese trimestre, y han pasado 14 meses), pagas el 21% de tus beneficios (ingresos - gastos) en concepto de IRPF y esto tampoco es problema porque tienes un gestor que te hace todo el papeleo (porque el papeleo no es difícil pero pegarse con las administraciones no esta pagado)

Además dedicas un rato a medias con el departamento de comunicación (o sea, tu mismo) a preparar presupuestos para clientes y otro a buscar proveedores que te ofrezcan producto de calidad a buen precio (en mi caso lo más complicado es el material de embalaje y protección para mis envíos, esto está en constante evolución en busca de algo que ofrezca una protección óptima para minis que cuestan lo que cuestan, que además sea bonito porque pagando estas cantidades lo mínimo es una presentación bonita sin sacrificar protección, y que además salga económico o no me suponga un gasto de tiempo excesivo (a veces he dedicado hasta 5 horas a preparar una caja de miniaturas para enviar, pero del departamento de transportes hablamos otro día)

Como veis para esto hay que ser multitarea, jaja. Pasad un buen día!

[En] ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT

So many times when we thought in a professional miniature painter we imagin a guy locked in a small freak room messy and full of paints and things all around, painting lonely all day without seeing sunlight. Well this could be partialy true (I saw rooms like that, but my Studio used to be more or less clean). But, there are many tasks that go unnoticed and take so many time.

One of them is accounting work, let me explain, being self workerr in Spain means to work for tax office part of your time, free, even more, pay to do their job

Do you remember when I wrote about communication work and told you I spent around 15% of my time doing that? another 5% is accounting work. Obviously making invoices is not a big work, if you spend between 1 to 4 weeks painting a mini, at the end of the month you only had to do one or two invoices, and if you are bit clever you'll have an excel template that does most of the work for you

Accounting expenses is not so hard neither, yeah I need to scan and clasify all tickets and provider's invoices (paints, pedestals, brushes, shipping costs, web hosting, internet...) so again an excel sheet is a big help.

Neither a trouble quarterly statement (where you do a VAT balance between what you paid to your providers and that you charged to your customers to pay tax office, or, if you are lucky and get a negative balance, ask for a return, as I did in january-march 2014, and wait patiently until tax office want to pay you. If you are wondering, I'm still waiting 600 € for that quarter, 14 months after).
You need to pay too a 21% of your profits (income less expenses) as IRPF (an spanish tax) and that's not hard as you have a bussines agent that do all paperwork for you, because doing it is not hard, but fighting with administrations is another war.

You still need to share some time with your communications department (ie. with yourself) to make budgets to your customers and to look for better providers that offer you quality products at best price (in my case, harderst thing is to find packing materials to protect my shippings, wich are alwais evolving looking for something that could offer best protection to minis that are a great expense to my customers, and that could be at the same time good looking because with those prices minimum is to offer a nice presentation without loosing protection, and at the same time should be not too expensive and not too time consuming (I reach 5 hours preparing a mini for shipment, but packing department should be another entry)
