Painting mechanical metals using airbrush texturing

[En] When we think about airbrush as miniature painting tool, most people automatically think about soft minis very clean with smooth transitions, pastel color and soft general light and shadows with not so much focusing.

Reality is that aibrush is an extremely versatile tool that allows us to do several different works as  light concepts to fine detail work or textures, that is what i'm going to talk about tolday.

Airbrush pointing is one of the hardest options, very difficult to achieve because it requires so many trigger control as only one combination of movements will give us the corect effect keeping some control about the spray to avoid paint unwanted areas.

Effect is subtle and it's hard to see in pictures, it's very realisting in hand and give us, in that metallics case, and old and used effect. We can do it letting flow just a bit air (pushing just a bit the trigger) and big amounth of paint (pulling the trigger half way more or less). Best option is to try in a paper until we get the effect and then move to the mini without moving the trigger's finger. More paint offers bigger points but less control, more or less what we get if we let flow less air. Airbrush can stock easily if we work in that way so many time.

First step is to paint a basecoat of all pieces with boltgun metal (citadel)

First pointing (airbrush) is done with a mixture more or less 2/3 panzer brown (model air) and 1/3 black (army painter)

Second pointing (airbrush) was done with 2/3 black (army painter) + 1/3 panzer brown (model air) and a couple of black ink dots

I painted some scratches using a brush with mithtil silver (citadel), it's very important to do it before inks work

To increase definition I outlined the scratches with black

Using cheksnut ink I start tom grease and mark shadows. Satin effect achieved with inks will give us machine looking

I continued inks work with black and a bit of cheksnut

I outlines external edges with mithril silver to increase definition

If we choose to do same work with golds it should look very good too, but we need to add a second step that is paint some light adding silver to gold base.

As you see it's a very easy work that looks fantastic, even more, it works to show you that airbrush is just another tool with so many different posibilities, just need to have courage to try something new.

See you soon!
