Avengers, incoming project: Step 5

[English] I was working on Avengers 5 weeks until now. Not so many times I have dedicated as much time to one project. At this point I think I'm gonna need almost 7 weeks, around 350 hours to complete scene, and It's going to be very close to Model World Expo Stresa 2014.

Even with that I'm very happy to see how it's growing to become something to be proud. This week I advanced a lot finishing Thor (some of you could saw at my facebook) and Iron Man (but with him I needed to work on weekend to keep my shcedule on time)

[En] To complete Thor where we let it past week I needed to paint basecoat of the cloack and a couple of general shadows using airbrush before glue it to main body and fix it with a couple of external pins. Fixing is complex to use normal pins so I thought this option was better. After that I painted it with the same colors as American captain's reds but as surface was too big I decided to texturice a little pointing to get a more fun effect.

[En] Only accesories left. I painted hammer and helmet's wings that are for me that give sense and live to the miniature. After that I attached it to the base near cap.

[En] Iron Man's painting process is slow because I need to repeat same steps again and again. It's not hard but time consumming. First step is to paint using only black and white sketching lights and shadows looking for reflects. After that I cover everything with a red basecoat. Using airbrush, layers are partially transparent so basecoat let us see previous black and white work (pic 1). I recover whites painting over previous ones (pic 2) and after that I do the same with blacks (pic 3). I'll paint the armor using only those 3 colors.

[En] In the first pic we can see how layering on medium tones work adding color purity, second pic shows  preliminar color work finished. Using only those 3 colors give us a pinkish tone that we should correct later. Third pic show how I started to add definition using shadow outlines.

[En] I started gold work painting with airbrush a basecoat done with english uniform + japanese uniform, working over red reflects I have the volume work previously done, but tone is too reddish so I correct it adding white, yellow and green, once I'm happy with gold tone I start the light outlines.

[En] I need to continue light outline's work adding 3 different light tones to reds and 2 in gold parts, so at the end we have light outlines with their own lights and reflects.
Once finished I start the pinkish tone correction adding rackham red and acravia red (from rackham too) shades (in pic 2 I started work, but it's not finished until pic 3, so you can see how is changing from 1 to 3). Last thing is to paint some elemens in steel (even if some of them are artistic license as in the film are in other color, but looks fine), and I finish all painting blue glow effects.

[En] I glued Iron Man to base and take a picture to see how's going. Fitting Hulk, the only one green element in hole scene it's not going to be easy.

Last Week's Activity: Week 26

I supose this entry should be posted yesterday. Lately with Avenger's scene I'm working ok weekends too so sometimes it's being complex to know when a new week starts or ends, sometimes I don't have clear if today is really tuesday or we are still on sunday.
Neither helps getting mail from customers or fans at any time on day or night seven days a week (due different time zones)

OK, well, last week I finished Thor and started Iron Man (wich is so advanced too) so I think i'm going to finish in time, maybe I could make my luggage without hurries :D

Even more. A painting course is starting to born in Jerez de la Frontera durong ¿26 & 27 July? we have still some avaiable places, I'll post more details this week if someone is interested.

And at last, last week I receibed some new stuff I'm plenty happy to use for first time. An Iwata airbrush (HP-BP wich in a first touches I noticed that trigger is maybe little hard, but I found the thread to adjust it so I need to play a little to set it up at my taste) and a box of Josonja's paints :)

Avengers: Incoming project; Step 4

[English] Even with all those weeks troubles to keep a normal working time I was able to advance a lot with the scene's miniatures. American Captain is done (alwais need to look for retouches at the end) and Thor is growing fine, but we need to know that Thor is the easiest one of the 4 minis (if you don't look at the face)

[En] Once finished the blues on Cap, I need some color to get contrast and having some references, so I painted basecoats. After that I worked on whites. Base is a mix of Astronimican grey and dheneb stone (both from fundation) enlighted with pure white and shadows with care and some grey.

On reds I aplied a basecoat of a mix between redish brown (Andrea) and red gore (citadel), and I enlighted them with Rackham red (obviously from rackham) ans some pale flesh and white. I love to work with rackham reds, but unfortunately they don't work propertly on airbrush so all work was done by brush.

[En] After that I worked on leathers with several tones of brown, pointing it and outlining, and the face with several tones of flesh. I don't use to paint flesh with this range of colors, but those minis are too comic so the range fits perfectly, less realistic. Shield was painted as reds but with airbrush using close tones of red in other brands as citadel or vallejo, after that I aplied several glazes of rackham red to make it closer. I aplied a satin varnish coat to make material different so it's hard to take a pic.

[En] Next step is start Thor. I used airbrush to paint chainmail. I used Black, Dark, blue sea, Basalt grey, Enchanted blue, Astronomican Grey and Ivory in different proportions. Volume was painted from bigger to smaller, ie. first of all legs are like cilinders, then I painted big muscular groups, then smaller and last of all fine volumes. I finished with outlining with 3 different tones of light outline to choose, looking to reflects.

After that I workd on the black coat using blacks, greens and blues, but in this first try I used too much green and not enought blue so I need to correct later.

[En] I painted basecoats as I did on Cap before to get perspective. After that I painted leathers and plate finery as I did con Cap and chainmail and then painted face and hands with flesh ranges and hair with a base on english uniform enlighted with ice yellow ans shadows with some brown. I'm not happy with skin, face and hands in this mini are complex and after a few working hours looking is not still as clean as I want, I work on it more later, for now my priority is to finish.

Some summer painting advices

esponja

 [English]

Summer is comming and temperature is starting to grow. Somewhere in Spain we are close to 40ºC (104ºF) if we didn't reached them yet. With this temperature painting is harder everyday. We can solve it partially with some easy advertisments. Anyway there is no Absolute solution and everyone of us has to adapt in the best way possible. For me, summer is the best to paint because temperature affects my painting way making mi brush stroke matt, meanwhile in winter cold temperature and humidity tend to satin my work and I don't like it.

Easier solution is obvious, use air conditioning. ideal temperature for me is around 25-26ºC (78ºF) with low humidity. You are still sweating a lot but paint flows good and have a good matt looking. If you are rented or just don't want to make works, or don't wanna waste so many money, you can use a portatil AC and you can find one for less than 200 €

If you need something cheaper, use a clasical fan, even better if you put on front a pail full of ice to cold the air, or if you are DIY handiman you can tune it and do something like THIS (I'm a link):

For sure wet palette is absolutely needed. If you don't know how to do it I give you the way in my article "Some Interesting Questions I" (First Question below in the English section). Anyway is as following:
Tupperware lid
sponge
paper towels (to keep it from slipping the palette)
greaseproof paper
all thoroughly moistened but not overflow to the baking paper and paint does not float!

And a trick not so much people knows and it's the easier thing in the world: use cold water (from the fridge) to make your wet palette. That keeps the paint fresh and make it dry slower. I hear so many times people complaining about their paint dries in the brush before reach the mini and this can help. Anyway you need to make a good amounth of mix in your palette, I saw people with so low mix that it's impossible to keep it wet! I use a portable fridge to keep my water filled bottles, obviously you are free to make them company with a good beer :)

Last Week's Activity: Week 25

Past week was an extra work Chaos. Let me explain, I lost almost all monday work time because I went to dentist in the morning to reconstruct a tooth, I arrived very lato to my studio and had to leave early to go to massagist so I had almost time to work on minis.

on tuesday mi wife had doctor in Jerez to see how is everything going after caesarean so I went with her not working on afternoon because even if I keep my daughter on my studio with me, she was not going to leave me work.

I lost Thuesday because I had doctor for me on the afternoon and we lost morning again in Jerez making Social Securoty papers as seems that they made a mistake crossing data with employment office so was outdate since 2008. A joke that must be solved in person (at 76 km from house) because "they don't do it" by phone...

On Friday I was till my b"##$ so I went to Fuengirola with the Monkeys to the swimming pool...

Good news are that i finished Cap and I had almost done Thor's body.

Last Week's Activity: Week 24; Avengers. Incoming Project step 3

[EN]This week I worked so much and only in the avengers scene. First of all was continue with the color's car from the point I finished last week. I added more black to increse shadows intensity. Doing that I had to retouch lights and medium tones.

Then I started to work on car's definition painting black bases on elements that wasn't bodywork. I painted black the shadow outlines. I marked the scratches too so they could be seen easily.

[EN] I started to work too on ligh outlines. Those are very important to show a reflective color, so I painted them in 3 different intensities to make brights. That's going to give me realism.

I painted the chrome effects with white, black, grey and a greenish tone done mixing dark blue sea and a green I had in my palette and that I don't remember why.

I started to paint asphalt with several soft layers of dry brush in different grey tones over black primmer.

[EN] Even I'm gonna do some transoparent windows, there is one that I couldn't cut because it's placed at the rear of the car and cutting it could decrease structure's stability, so I need to paint it with some black, grey and blue tones and freehand some scratches. Lights were painted in the same way. This is a technic close to sky earth no metallic metal.

[EN] I cutted acetate as needed and glued to simulate broken windows. Hardest thing here is to glue them in place right. Glue's cure time and having no more hands are the biggest troubles.

[EN] I tried that difference between painted glass and acetate don't seems so different so I painted it with soft layers so looks like the painted one but still have some transparency. In that way I can have some of the advantages of each sistems, but some of the troubles of both too. Sometimes it's needed to sacrifice quality in one element to increase hole scene.

[EN] I'm not happy with the broken glass effect. It's not so realistic. Correcting it's a hard work and i'm not sure I want to do it, but when other people see the same as you in a clear way (as noticed on facebook), there are no other way that correct it. I added some sand to fix the car in place with the base once glued. Remember that there are going to be 2 minis attached to the car so it's very important to ensure everything.

[EN] Time to start painting on miniatures. I'm gonna start with Caps because it's in front of the scene and his color are closer to car's so it's going to make the line to other minis.

I look for a latest comics color scheme. much more realistic and old. I want the soldier-caps looking better that flags-caps look with pure reds and blues. I want that my blue looks like jeans for example, so i'm not looking neither for purple blue on the ilustration.

I used fenrish grey as base mixed with black and airbrushed to use the double primmer pre enlightment. I used so many black on shadows and ice blue and spacewolf grey in lights. Later I introduced tones and texture working with brush, some ice yellow and ivory.

Cursed Monkeys

Cursedmonkeys.com (sin "the").

As we announced one year ago in the Cursed Monkeys web, domain www.TheCursedMonkeys.com stopped it's work definitely. A year ago we posted HERE that we made a migration from WrodPress to a private server witha new URL address www.cursedmonkeys.com (without "the"). We adviced that old domain would reduirect to the new web along the old registred domain worked, and finally stopped 9 days ago.

If you tried to reach us trought old one you could see that doesn't work anymore as you didn't changed your favoruited address, please do it now :)

Avengers: Incoming Project. Step 2

[Spanish][Read it in English below]

Yo he usado milliput.

We'll continue with the Entries series I started past week explaining the Avenger's scene steps. Step 1 for me, was planning, buying the minis and assembling them to build a scratch like I showed you last week and that you can see as following.

Now it's time to enter into the scene. first of all is umount the car buyed at chinese shop to work on it more confortable. It's a RC car so I need to extract the electronical components and cut several sections as back part to fit into the oval base, front window and one side window. Other one I think it's needed to ensure the car strenght so I think I'm going to paint it. Those cutted I'm going to do with acetate to be transparent.

Over the inner chassis, now visible, I sculpted some seats, steering wheel and dashboard. I haven't enought space and time to build completely so I fill with sand and stones like if in the battle some debris entered in the car. I looked for a Mercedes SLS dashboard and freehanded it in my car more or less.

I primmed the bodywork in black and the adjusted the inner part and screwed in place. I checked the control panel to be sure it's visible. I don't need it to be very clear, just enought for those who enjoy searching details.

I start to work now in the floor. My scene it's placed at the end of the film, over the hiway or an a avenue of New York. Sidewalks are out scene. I used a PVC plate as terrain's base due I'm going to crash it. If I were going to do a clear floor I could use the wood base instead directly.
Over this plate I glued a sandpaper sheet (medium grain) to simulate asphalt texture. If you want to use this material with smaller minis, just switch to fine grane paper. I marked the car's place and Thor's & Iron man's, and made the holes for pins.

As I told you, my floor is going to be damaged because battle, so I drawed with screwdriver a scratch about where to cut the plate. You can use any tool with tip to do it.

Using a good cutter I cut the pieces. Pvc wear down the cutting edge too fast so having replacements it's a good idea. I cut some hits and cracks too. After that I glued the plates to the wood base in different angles and heights to work on tridimensionality

Working again on the car. I fill the wheels holes with stuff. I used a thin plasticard sheet to glue it at the curved rear part of the car, cutted to fit on the oval base. Once glued I repaired it with stuff. I used milliput.
Even more, I dent the car heating it with a lighter and the hitting with care with a stone once soft.

painting time!. I started with another white primmer spray from above, not covering completely, just some help to paint clear colors over black. Using airbrush and only white and black I painted the car's reflects as it was new (without dents) until I'm happy with the effect. Then I spary transparent coats of color. I used a blue (fenris grey from fundation range, close to oxford blue but with less purple) and vermin brown (an orange brown) from citadel.
At this point i'm happy with it. Looks like a metaliced grey, but it's too clear for my scene, I'll add more black later.

I primmed the minsi with double primmer: Black & white and placed in scene to see how it's going. I'm plenty happy for a work's week but time it's going to be a problem. Will see how it's going on.
