Valkirie from Nocturna Models

 Hi guys.

I started this bust in a workshop during 2018 and, as usual, it went from the workshop to the wips showcase due to commissions deadlines. Until now, I just wanted to do something fresh and big in this year where I almost painted nothing bigger than 30mm.

The products from Nocturna are always a pleasure to work on because they take care of every detail and finish. I loved to paint this bust, and also, I wanted to do a very small terrain just to hide the cut on the legs so we can move from "just a bust" to "a small scene with background" just adding some dirty water from a river or swamp and a bit of vegetation. Just with that, we can imagine a soldier during an incursion with stealth, walking silent to the enemy's camp base.

Gabriel Lorca

Hail, Officers! To finish the week we bring you the studio photos of the bust of Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs), modelled by Emilio Jose Dominguez Calvo and painted by me at the Hydra Studio Painting Department.

This is a big bust, (scale 1/6 more or less), much bigger than I used to paint, so Painting had to be focused in a different way looking much more to achieve good skin textures than contrast or intensity. The objective was to paint it in a realistic way rather than an artistic one.

Some of you had the chance to see it live exhibited at the Cruz Herrera Museum in La Linea de La Concepción, during a multi-artist exposition with several different art ways: paintings, photographs, and other more classical ways of art. We were the only miniature painting representation and we had an honoured place in front of the entrance of the museum.

[Es] Cuando Pedro Fdez me enseñó su próxima novedad solo pude pensar... "estas mal de la cabeza tio", pero como no es ninguna novedad pues al lio xD

Pedro es un escultor como pocos, capaz de hacerle difícil al pintor la figura más sencilla o hacerte sencilla la cosa más rara que haya salido de su tórrida mente. Todos sabeis que no soy un pintor muy de color, soy más bien de atmosfera y realismo, así que mi confusión al pedirme que pintase yo esta novedad era evidente, pero Pedro es un tío que sabe lo que quiere y que por algún extraño motivo confía en mi para hacerlo, no suele ponermelo fácil, pero la verdad es que me obliga a salir de mi "zona cómoda" (curioso que este fín se semana he escuchado eso varias veces) y suelen salir cosas muy bonitas.

Para mas complejidad, el esquema de color que a mi me gustaba lo estaba pintando Ivan Hortal, con lo que me tocaba el otro, pero que le vamos a hacer :)

Lo curioso es que al final la cosa ha salido muy bien, la figura es muy bonita y limpia y se pinta rápido. Espero que os guste, y si eso, acercaros a SU BLOG (medio en construcción) y comprad una o dos, que este tio me da de comer :)

PD: Además son limitadas.

[En] When Pedro fdez showed me his next release I just could think ... "this guy has something wrong on his mind", but as this is not anything new it was not a surprise xD

Pedro is al excelent sculptor able to do the simpler mini hard to painter or making easy the extrangest think coming out of his mind. You all know I'm not a very colorful painter, I'm much more of athmosphere and realism, so I was a bit shocked when he request me to paint this release, but Pedro is a guy who relly knows what he want and because some reasons that hide from my compression, he trust relly in me to do them. He don't used to make it easy for me because he forces me to go out my confort zone (Curious I heard that many times this weekend) and at last beautiful thinks come out.

To do it more complex, the color scheme I liked was being painted by Ivan Hortal, so I had to do the another one, That's life.

At the end everything went right and the mini is beautiful and clean and very fast to paint. Hope you like it, and if so, go to HIS BLOG (half constructed) and buy one or two, that guy gives me my food :)

Sinestro, the Yellow Lantern

[Es] Tengo desde hace un par de meses en casa una copia del busto "Anonymous" de Alfonso Giraldes, esperando turno. Como me quede parado unos días por custiones logisticas (se han retrasado dos envíos de minis de mi cola de trabajo que tenían que llegar y no llegaron) y estoy un pelín oxidado tras el parón navideño, decidí dedicarle un tiempo de forma relajada.

El mayor reto era encontrar una idea para hacerle algo que Alfonso no hubiese hecho ya con su millón de versiones pintadas. Si es que no lo pone fácil.... Total que la anatomía me recordaba a un tipo malo delgadito, y no se porqué (ya que no soy muy fan de Linterna Verde ni nada) se me vino a la cabeza Sinestro, su némesis, el Linterna Amarilla. La conversión no es muy dificil, apenas vestirlo un poco, añadir el emblema, el cuello y afeitarlo, el resto es pintura.

La verdad es que la cosa no ha salido mal del todo, el busto me gusta bastante como ha quedado y es muy de divertido de pintar. Es curioso porque como la mayoría de trabajos de Alfonso, en un primer vistazo parece un boceto rápido hecho así como para pasar el rato, pero según vas entrando en profundidad ves que hay muchas cosas pensadas detrás que tienen un proposito bien meditado (igual que con los mil bustos pintados, que son bocetos de hora y media pero muy pensados, y de lo que más me ha gustado suyo últimamente). 

Creo que es la mini con la que mejor me lo he pasado en bastante tiempo, así que Alfonso, si lees esto, tomatelo como un cumplido, me ha molado tela :D

Espero que os mole. Y oye, si a alguien le mola lo bastante para hacer una oferta, pues bien recibida :)

[En] I have since a couple of months an "Anonymous" copy of this bust from Alfonso Giraldes, waiting his slot. As I become stopped some days due logistic troubles (a couple of shippings with my next commisions should arrived, but still none) and I'm a bit oxidated from the Christmas Stop, I decided to give it some relaxing time.

Hardest was to find something Alfonso didn't yet on it with his one million versions painted. He don't make it easy for us... The anatomy remids me some kind of thin bad guy, and I don't know why (As I'm not a big Green lantern fan or something) The bad guy, Yellow Lantern, Sinestro, his Nemesis, come to my mind. Conversion is not hard at all, just some dressing,the neck, the simbol, shave him and painting.

In fact the ending is not bad at all, i like it so much and it's very funny to paint. It's curious because as most Alfonso's works, first looking shows a fast skets did like to expend some time, but as deeper you get on it, you can see so many things thought behind that have a purpose very well thinked (as the million paintedc busts, that are one hour and a half sketches but very controlated and some of his best things for me lately).

I think is the funniest mini I painted for a while so Alfonso, if you read this, take it as a compliment, I loved to paint it! :D

[Charity] Barbarian bust

[Es]Hace un par de Semanas mi amigo Piqui me preguntó si quería colaborar con una causa benéfica para ayudar a financiar el tratamiento de una niña pequeña con cancer pintando uno de sus originales, por supuesto, dije que sí.

Este busto es una escultura original esculpida por Antonio Fernández "Piqui" como prototipo o boceto conceptual antes de esculpir el busto definitivo del barbaro incluido en el kit "The Adventurers" de Tiny Leads. Es un busto Cartoon pequeñito y lleno de personalidad.

This Bust is an Original Scratch Sculpted by Antonio Fernández "Piqui" as prototype or concept sketch before sculpting the final Barbarian bust included in the "the Adventurers" kit from Tiny Leads. It's a small cartoon bust full of personality.

Sacrifice by Origen Art

[Es] Hace poco terminé la pintura del primer Boxart de 2015 para Origen Art, un pequeño busto en escala 1:16 que fue presentado en el concurso de Leganés con una tirada pre-ventas de 50 unidades y que se vendió estupendamente.

Se trata de un busto femenino con una anatomía muy cuidada y elegante (ligerita de ropa) y mucho movimiento y expresividad. ha sido todo un placer pintarlo y es mi primer trabajo serio terminado desde antes de navidad.

Espero que os guste tanto como a mi. Ah! y felicitar a Francisco Galán por el diseño del fondo para la marca, me encanta!

[En] a few days ago I finished my painting work on the first 2015 Boxart done for Origen Art. A small 1:16 scaled bust that was released as pre-sale un the past Leganes Contest with only 50 units in the event and It had a really well welcome.

It's a femnale bust with an specially detailed anatomy, elegant with movement and expresivity (and not so much clothes). It was a pleasure to paint and it's my first serious work since christmas.

hope you like it as much as I do. Oh! and Congrats to Francisco Glana that done the bakcground design for the brand and that is really impressive!.

Arrogante, comeflores, da igual como le llamen, el elfo siempre esta por encima del resto, otro de los bustos de Tiny Leads que he pintado recientemente.

Arrogant, flowers eater, no matthers how you call him, the elven is alwais over all ohers. Another of Tiny Leads bust I painted recently.

DWARF

Otro de los bustos que he pintado de la marca Tiny Leads y que es mi favorito junto con el mago es el enano.

Siempre me han gustado los enanos, son brutos, les gusta la cerveza, y reparten mamporros como ellos solos. Espero que este os guste también!

I alwais liked dwarfs, they are brute, like beer and give big smashes as only they can. Hope this one like you too!

WIZARD

Ayer se presentó la marca Tiny Leads, gestionada por compañeros de los Cursed Monkeys, aunque oficialmente su lanzamiento es en primavera, ayer abrieron la tienda online con un una tirada limitada de 50 unidades de un conjunto de bustos estilo caricatura representando a los arquetipos de personajes de los clásicos juegos de Rol.

Yo me he pintado una versión de los mismos que iré mostrando aquí en días sucesivos. Hoy toca el MAGO.

Yesterday Tiny Leads brand was intruduced to market, managed by Cursed Monkeys Teammates. Officilly they'r release will be in spring, but they opened their online shop with a limited shot of 50 units of a couple of busts cartoon stiled representing archetypes of the classic RPG characters.

I painted a version of themselves that I'm going to show you during next days. Today I'll show you the WIZARD

92nd Gordon Highlanders. 1815. Bust

[Es] Tenía este busto en casa desde hace ya bastante tiempo. La verdad es que disfruto pintando bustos, y más si son de esta calidad. Ya lo tenía empezado antes de decidir ir a Monte San Savino, y mi idea era jugar con el color sin pretender ser excesivamente fiel al contexto de la figura.

En este caso he utilizado tonos fríos en un lado de busto y tonos cálidos en el otro, buscando un efecto de contraste entre ambos lo suficientemente visible para que se note la diferencia pero lo suficientemente sutil para que no parezca un efecto de iluminación forzada (OSL).

La verdad es que lo he disfrutado enormemente. Quizás pase desapercibido pero lo que cuenta es que yo me lo he pasado bien. Además al final ganó bronce en Master Historical Painting junto a mi otro busto del cruzado.

[En] I had this bust at home long time ago. In fact I enjoy a lot painting busts, much more if they are at this top quality. I had it started before decide to go to Monte San Savino and my idea was to play with color without being too much accurate with context.

In this case I used cold tones in one side and warm ones in the other side, looking for a contrast effect between thyem enought to be seen but subtle enought to not look as a forced lighting effect (OSL).

I really enjoyed this one a lot. Maybe it will go unnoticed but for me fun was the most important this time. And at the end it won bronze with my other crusader bust in Master Historical Painting.

Templar knight in Jerusalem (1/10 bust)

 [ES] Esta figura lleva en mi vitrina de WIPs un montón de tiempo. Mi mujer Cris la comenzó a pintar al oleo hace casi un año, pero las circunstancias (o sea nuestra hija) aparcaron la mini. Cuando se me presentó la oportunidad de ir a Monte San Savino este año automáticamente la mini entró en recamara. Una vez terminados los proyectos principales me sobraban unos días y los dediqué a este busto recomenzando de cero.

Como el tiempo era muy justo, mis técnicas habituales de pintura no eran una opción, el degradado que trabajo yo no es lento, pero cuando necesito una marcha más trabajo con texturas de este tipo, buscando mucho más la intención de la pincelada (como diría Alfonso, Banshee, gran defensor de este tipo de interpretación) que el degradado perfecto, esto me permite no tener que integrar o fundir los trazos, aunque exige mucha más concentración y una idea muy clara de lo que se busca porque no hay opción de corregir.

no es algo que haga habitualmente, pero nunca esta de más tener varios recursos para poder aplicar en diferentes necesidades.

Al final estoy bastante contento con el busto, la expresividad de la cara y la ambientación me gustan mucho, aunque algo de tiempo extra para pulir el paño negro no hubiese venido mal.

[EN] This figurine was in my WIPs showcase long time ago. My wife Cris started it with oils almost a year ago but circunstances (that is, our daughter) parked the mini. When the oportunity to go to Monte San Savino this year appeared to me this mini entered in schedule automatically. Once finished my principal projects I had some days to expend on this bust that I restarted from the beggining.

As timeframe was too short, my usual technics were not an option. Shading I use it's not slow, but when I need an extra gear I work with this kind of textures, looking much more for brush stroke intencionality (As Alfonso, Banshee, should say, big defender of this kind of interpretation) than perfect shading, so I don't need to clean or integrate strokes, but need much more concenteration and a clear idea of what are you doing because you can't correct.

That's not something I used to do, but several resources are alwais welcome if you need to aply on different needs.

At the end I'm quite happy with this bust, face expression and athmosphere are quite good even if some more extra time to polish the black cloth could be great.

Hace algunas semanas uno de mis amigos (Antonio Fdez; Piqui) lanzó al mercado su propia marca bajo el sello de Heroes y Villanos: Outworld Minaituras. Su primera referencia fue Moon Wanderer, un busto de un bárbaro.

Antes de todo esto, mientras aún estaba trabajando en el, Jesús Martín de Nocturna Miniaturas la vio y comentó algo así como "buah esto tiene que quedar guapísimo en verde orco" y desde entonces no me lo pude quitar de la cabeza. no se si algún día Jesús se la va a pintar o no pero como no quería tampoco pisarle la idea conversioné el mío para que pareciese Azog, el orco de la peli del hobbit.

Fue divertido y relajante pintármelo. Una mini para mi propia vitrina. Espero que os guste.

Some weeks ago one of my friends (Antonio Fdez; Piqui) launched his own brand under the seal of Heroes & Villains: Outworld Miniatures. His first reference was Moor Wanderer, a barbarian bust.

before that when he was still working on it Jesús Martín from nocturna Models saw it and said something like "wow that should look great in green as an ork!" and since that i could only see it in that way. I don't know if Jesús will paint it in green some day but as I didn't wanted to steal his idea I converted mine to look like The hobbit Orc: Azog.

It was very funny and relaxing painting, One minaiture to my own showcase. Hope you like it!.
