Monte San Savino 2016
I always love to go to Monte. For me, this is not a contest at all. It's more like the "Annual Modelling Dinner". A place to share with other professionals and enthusiasts our impressions about how everything is going on.
And for sure this year was as good as any other one.

Treasure Hunter
[Es] Recuerdo que cuando me mudé a Andalucía y comenzamos a realizar quedadas de los Cursed Monkeys, una de las cosas que siempre más he disfrutado y para las que he tratado de sacar tiempo siempre aparte de mi trabajo como profesional, han sido las colaboraciones.
Todos recordáis trabajos como The Getaway (El dragón), Fujita's dinner o Caronte, que hice con Piqui, The consecration of Napoleón, que hice con Cris, mi mujer, The summoner, que hicieron Piqui y Cris o el enano minero de Piqui y Alex, entre otros. Son trabajos que siendo, algunos sencillos, otros complejos, nos han llevado un paso más allá.
En todo este tiempo siempre me había quedado la espinita de no colaborar con Fran, que es un grandisimo creador de escenas, pero que es tan detallista que nunca termina y, que además quiere pintar el mismo, por lo que siempre se escamoteaba, hasta ahora :D
No se como lo he conseguido, pero hemos llegado a un acuerdo para trabajar conjuntamente en tres escenas, por ahora, dos de ellas al modo clásico, el hace lo que le da la gana y yo lo pinto, pero esta, la de hoy, es totalmente diferente, especial, primero porque había un objetivo y se ha cumplido, y no no es un premio en un concurso.
Lo segundo porque la condición que me puso Fran es que la escena se creaba desde cero colaborando entre los dos en todos los aspectos, desde la idea, que salió de una idea inicial suya completamente diferente a la mía, y hablando y jugando con blutac y con las minis llegamos a una tercera que no es ni una ni otra ni un punto medio, sino algo que nació allí con sus propias ideas.
Ambos debíamos trabajar en el terreno, en este caso una cueva, y aunque Fran hizo toda la escultura y el montaje, la distribución y la ingeniería para darle profundidad a la cueva las hicimos a medias.
Ambos debíamos conversionar, en mi caso me toco reposicionar el brazo del minotauro y reesculpir la musculatura del hombro pecho y espalda, así como una parte del cráneo, mientras que Fran conversionó el enano completo y la cara del minotauro.
Ambos debíamos pintar, y si bien, el tiempo condicionó mucho esta parte, sobre todo por el trabajo de jornadas eternas que tiene Fran, los colores de partida, el esquema base de color, es cosa suya, aunque yo me he encargado de pintar completamente ambas figuras basándome en sus ideas y adaptandolas a mi estilo, buscando además un tributo al uso de color de Mirko Caballoni.
Fran se encargó de pintar por completo el terreno y el buho, y yo le asesoré con la integración del mismo una vez pintado, a las figuras, con lo cual fue necesario retocar, pero siempre por su mano.
El resultado es bastante diferente a lo esperado, es un trabajo duro, largo y complejo porque somos dos personas trabajando coordinadas pero a distancia con referencias en foto únicamente, y algunas quedadas para poner cosas en común o intercambiar piezas y seguir trabajando. Pero sinceramente, es de lo más bonito que he pintado este año, y lo he disfrutado mucho.
Todos los que habéis pasado por Monte San Savino este fín de semana lo habéis podido ver en vivo, espero que os haya gustado, para los demás, unas fotos, no muy buenas esta vez, tenía prisa y las hicimos en condiciones algo improvisadas y no atiné con el balance de blancos, pero tendréis que haceros una idea entre las de proceso (espero poder explicarlo con más calma en otro post) tiradas con el móvil, y las finales.
[En] I can remember that when I moved to Andalucia and we started to go to meetings of Cursed Monkeys, one of the better things was alwais to cooperate with another one in a project and I alwais tried to keep some painting time apart my job as professional to do that.
You can remember works as The Getaway (The Dragon), Fujita's dinner or Caronte I did with Piqui, The consecration of Napoleon I did with Cris, my wife, The summoner Cris did with Piqui or the miner dwarf Piqui did with Alex, beetween some others. All of them were works that even some of them being simple, pushed us one step further
All that time something was annoying me, and was that I could never cowork with Fran, that is an amazin scene creator, but so detailed that he never ends, and anyway, he wants to paint his own scenes too, so he could alwais dodge the bullet, till now :D
I don't know how I did it, but we get an agreement to cooperate in 3 scenes, by now, 2 of them in the classical way, he does anything he wants and I paint it, but this one, today's one, it's special, totally different, firt of all because we have and objetive and no, it was not a contest award.
Second one because one of Fran's conditions was that we must create both the scene from the beggining in all the sides, from the idea, that born not from Fran's mind or mine, that were completely different, neither from the middle, it just born alone from a mindstorm playing with blutac, wood and the minis
We both must work on terrain, in this case a cave, and even if Fran did al the sculpting and assembling, composition and engineering to give the cave deepness was from both.
Both must work on conversions, so I switched the minotaurs arm and re sculpted the shoulder, chest and back muscles, and a small work on the head. Fran did the minotaurs face and all the dwarfs conversion.
We both must paint, and even timeframe was a big trouble here because Fran's work is very time consuming, color scheme was of his mind because I had to paint both minaitures with his ideas as he hasn't time to work on them. I adapted his ideas to my style and we wanted to try to do some kind of tribute to Mirko Caballoni's use of color.
Fran painted completely alone the base and the owl, and I suggested him how to integrate the miniatures once painted so he had to make corrections, but alwais from his brush.
We reached a scene far away from the original idea, a hard work, long and complex mostly because we were 2 persons working on the distance only with phone's pictures as reference and some meeting to share work and exchange pieces to keep working, but honestly it maybe the more beautiful thing I did this year and I was very happy doing it.
All of you that were at Monte San Savino this weekend could saw it in live, hope you liked it, to the others, some pictures, not so good this time as I was very hurry and we took them in some makeshift conditions and I couldn't fix the white balance propertly, you should imagin beetween final ones and wip ones (that I hope to explain better in another post)

Close future
[Es] Como todos habrés notado, la actividad del blog es bajisima. Este año está siendo muy duro con un montón de interferencias extra-laborales y me está costando un esfuerzo enorme cumplir los plazos, por tanto, como el cliente tiene prioridad, todo el trabajo "extra" que normalmente hago (tutoriales, publicaciones del blog, pasos a paso, artículos, consejos por email o facebook...) pasan a segundo plano y en muchas ocasiones no tengo tiempo para hacerlo.
Los próximos dos meses hasta Monte San Savino serán una locura, no solo por el proyecto conjunto que estoy haciendo con Fran Gil (que es muy grande) si no por la cantidad de trabajo que debo terminar para clientes en este tiempo. Más o menos tengo seis semanas y media para terminar siete figuras, va a ser un esfuerzo enorme!
Intentaré publicar lo más posible, pero si veis que no hay mucha actividad y queréis saber que está pasando, visitad de vez en cuando mi Facebook, donde pongo fotos rapidas tiradas con el movil ocasionalmente de en que estoy metido.
Y como Roman suele decir, Pintad felices! (o algo así, traducido)
[En] As all of you noticed, blog's activity is very poor this time. This is being a hard year with so many interferences not propertly from work and it's being a hard effort just to accomplish deadlines, so as customer has the absolute priority for me, all extra work that I susually do ( tutorials, blog's posts, step by step, articles, email advices or questions...) goes to second priority and most times I can't do it.
Next two months until Monte San Savino are going to be crazy, not only because the big project I'm doing in cooperation with Fran Gil as because the big amounth of work I had to finish for customer in this time. I have more or les six and a half weeks to complete seven miniatures and it's going to be very hard!
I'll try to post as much as possible, but if you don't see so much activity and you wanna know what's cooking, have a look at my Facebook, where I post fast phone's pictures of what I'm doing currently.
And as Roman should say... have a happy painting!

92nd Gordon Highlanders. 1815. Bust
[Es] Tenía este busto en casa desde hace ya bastante tiempo. La verdad es que disfruto pintando bustos, y más si son de esta calidad. Ya lo tenía empezado antes de decidir ir a Monte San Savino, y mi idea era jugar con el color sin pretender ser excesivamente fiel al contexto de la figura.
En este caso he utilizado tonos fríos en un lado de busto y tonos cálidos en el otro, buscando un efecto de contraste entre ambos lo suficientemente visible para que se note la diferencia pero lo suficientemente sutil para que no parezca un efecto de iluminación forzada (OSL).
La verdad es que lo he disfrutado enormemente. Quizás pase desapercibido pero lo que cuenta es que yo me lo he pasado bien. Además al final ganó bronce en Master Historical Painting junto a mi otro busto del cruzado.
[En] I had this bust at home long time ago. In fact I enjoy a lot painting busts, much more if they are at this top quality. I had it started before decide to go to Monte San Savino and my idea was to play with color without being too much accurate with context.
In this case I used cold tones in one side and warm ones in the other side, looking for a contrast effect between thyem enought to be seen but subtle enought to not look as a forced lighting effect (OSL).
I really enjoyed this one a lot. Maybe it will go unnoticed but for me fun was the most important this time. And at the end it won bronze with my other crusader bust in Master Historical Painting.

Templar knight in Jerusalem (1/10 bust)
[ES] Esta figura lleva en mi vitrina de WIPs un montón de tiempo. Mi mujer Cris la comenzó a pintar al oleo hace casi un año, pero las circunstancias (o sea nuestra hija) aparcaron la mini. Cuando se me presentó la oportunidad de ir a Monte San Savino este año automáticamente la mini entró en recamara. Una vez terminados los proyectos principales me sobraban unos días y los dediqué a este busto recomenzando de cero.
Como el tiempo era muy justo, mis técnicas habituales de pintura no eran una opción, el degradado que trabajo yo no es lento, pero cuando necesito una marcha más trabajo con texturas de este tipo, buscando mucho más la intención de la pincelada (como diría Alfonso, Banshee, gran defensor de este tipo de interpretación) que el degradado perfecto, esto me permite no tener que integrar o fundir los trazos, aunque exige mucha más concentración y una idea muy clara de lo que se busca porque no hay opción de corregir.
no es algo que haga habitualmente, pero nunca esta de más tener varios recursos para poder aplicar en diferentes necesidades.
Al final estoy bastante contento con el busto, la expresividad de la cara y la ambientación me gustan mucho, aunque algo de tiempo extra para pulir el paño negro no hubiese venido mal.
[EN] This figurine was in my WIPs showcase long time ago. My wife Cris started it with oils almost a year ago but circunstances (that is, our daughter) parked the mini. When the oportunity to go to Monte San Savino this year appeared to me this mini entered in schedule automatically. Once finished my principal projects I had some days to expend on this bust that I restarted from the beggining.
As timeframe was too short, my usual technics were not an option. Shading I use it's not slow, but when I need an extra gear I work with this kind of textures, looking much more for brush stroke intencionality (As Alfonso, Banshee, should say, big defender of this kind of interpretation) than perfect shading, so I don't need to clean or integrate strokes, but need much more concenteration and a clear idea of what are you doing because you can't correct.
That's not something I used to do, but several resources are alwais welcome if you need to aply on different needs.
At the end I'm quite happy with this bust, face expression and athmosphere are quite good even if some more extra time to polish the black cloth could be great.

Monte San Savino preview
[ES] Acabo de volver de Monte un año más. Está es mi séptima vez en Italia con la familia de la Legio. No he hecho muchas fotos así que tendréis que esperar al reportaje de Piqui en Cursed Monkeys para saber algo más del concurso.
Para mi esta esta la cena de navidad internacional de modelismo, que se hace en noviembre porque en Navidad nadie puede xD. Siempre me siento en Monte tan bien o mejor que en casa, y mayormente es gracias al esfuerzo de una persona que lo hace posible, el señor Franceso Farabi que trabaja como pegamento del modelismo internacional. Muchas gracias Fra ;-)
Este año ha sido especial para mi. No hjay una razón en particular, pero he disfrutado en este viaje mucho más que en muchos de los anteriores. ha sido un fin de semana genial.
Empecé a preparar las minis de concurso con solo 3 semanas porque no tenía pensado ir, pero en el último momento Iguazzu no pudo así que ocupé su lugar :) He pintado 7 bustos en este tiempo, 5 de fantasía esculpidos por Piqui y 2 de histórico de young miniaturas. Los publicaré tan pronto pueda sacar unas fotos.
Uno de los mejores momento fué ver a Antonio (Piqui) realmente emocionado y sin habla cuando ganamos el premio especial Legio Pictorum con nuesto display conjunto :D

For me this is the world's modellers christmas dinner, done in November because nobody can do it in Christmas xD. I alwais feel in Monte as good os better than at home, and mostly because there is one guy that make it possible. Mr. Francesco Farabi that work as glue for all international modellers. Thank you Francesco ;-)
For me this year was very special, There is no special reason, but I en joyed this trip much more than lot of previous ones. it was a fantastic weekend.
I started to prepare my contest minis just 3 weeks ago, as I hadn't planned to go, but at last Iguazuu couldn't so I took his place :) I painted 7 bust in that time, 5 fantasy ones sculpted by Piqui and 2 historicals from Young miniatures. I'll post them as soon as I can take some pics.
One of the best moments was seeing Antonio (Piqui) really emoted when we won the Legio Pictorum special price with our team entry :D

For me this year was very special, There is no special reason, but I en joyed this trip much more than lot of previous ones. it was a fantastic weekend.
I started to prepare my contest minis just 3 weeks ago, as I hadn't planned to go, but at last Iguazuu couldn't so I took his place :) I painted 7 bust in that time, 5 fantasy ones sculpted by Piqui and 2 historicals from Young miniatures. I'll post them as soon as I can take some pics.
One of the best moments was seeing Antonio (Piqui) really emoted when we won the Legio Pictorum special price with our team entry :D

Working for Monte San Savino
Estos son algunos de los proyectos en los que estoy trabajando. Evidentemente alguno es más fácil de adivinar que otros, pero bueno, tendréis que esperar un poco :)

Monte San Savino
Este fin de semana estaré en Monte San Savino junto con mis queridos amigos de The Cursed Monkeys Corp. Estamos preparandonos intensamente e incluso hemos comenzado un pequeño cursillo acelerado de italiano (podéis ver el vídeo de la primera lección AQUI )
Debido a mi condición de juez este año voy fuera de concurso, ¡pero eso no significa que no haya preparado algo exclusivo junto con Piqui para presentar allí!
Supongo que Alex mantendrá una cobertura vía twitter del evento ( @iguazzu ), es el más dado a este tipo de cosas. Yo intentaré subir algo ocasionalmente, pero sabéis que soy menos activo para eso.
This weekened I'm going to be at Monte San Savino with my very best friends from The Cursed Monkey Corp. We are preparing hard so we started a small fast italian lessons (you can see first video HERE )
Due I'm judge this year I'm going out contest, but that doesn't mean I didn't prepraed anything new to release there with Piqui!
I guess Alex will upload news about contest in twitter ( @iguazzu ), he's the most used to this kind of things. I'll try to upload something but you know i'm not as active as him with social media.

Monte San Savino Review
Como todos sabéis este fin de semana pasado he estado en Italia para el concurso Monte San Savino Show (en Monte San Savino, un pequeñísimo pueblo medieval en el centro de italia, a casi 2 horas en coche de Roma y algo más de una hora de Florencia).
Había escuchado buenas críticas de este concurso, sucesor del famoso Valle de Aosta, pero nada podía prepararme para lo que allí nos encontramos los 3 cursed monkeys que viajamos (Iguazzu, Piquifl y yo mismo).
No solo la hospitalidad Italiana ha sido abrumadora una vez más, sino que el emplazamiento es de una belleza increíble, pero si nos centramos un poco más en el concurso en si mismo, la cantidad y calidad de las obras presentadas nos dejo con la boca abierta. Algo más de 1000 miniaturas en preinscripción, aunque el número definitivo no ha trascendido, podrían ser unas 1200 en total. Si hablamos del nivel de pintura puedo afirmar que era incluso más alto que la pasada World Expo, provocando con esto que los premios estuviesen carísimos. Definitivamente no los regalaban.
Como esta feo eso de afirmar sin pruebas, os dejo un par de enlaces, uno a una galería de fotos que he encontrado en internet, y otro a la crónica en el blog de los cursed monkeys que ha escrito piqui hace solamente un rato:
En cuanto a resultados solamente voy a comentar los nuestros:
Iguazzu: Plata en master fantasía little paint; Plata en master fantasía Big paint
Piquifl & Arsies: Oro en Master fantasía supercreation
Arsies: Oro en Master fantasía Big paint; Oro Master Historical painting
Me gustaría comentar que estos resultados son excepcionales, únicamente 4 oros en master fantasía big paint y solamente 3 en supercreation, quedándose gente con un gran peso especifico en el mundillo fuera del oro.
Os dejo solamente con un par de fotos de mis displays, más adelante postearé fotos en detalle de las miniaturas nuevas.
As you all know this past weekend I've been in Italy for the Monte San Savino Show Contest (in Monte San Savino, a tiny medieval town in central Italy, nearly 2 hours drive from Rome and just over an hour from Florence).
I had heard good reviews of this contest, successor to the famous Aosta Valley, but nothing could prepare me for what we find there the 3 cursed monkeys who traveled (Iguazzu, Piquifl and myself).
Not only the Italian hospitality has been amazing once again, the location is incredibly beautiful, but if we focus a little more on the contest itself, the quantity and quality of the works left us with the mouth open. Just over 1000 models in pre-registration, although the final number has not published, could be approximately 1200 in total. If you talk about the level of paint I can say it was even higher than the last World Expo, so the prizes were expensive. Definitely not gifts.
As it's not fine to say it without proof that, I leave a couple of links, one to a gallery of photos I found online, and another blog chronicle posted in the coursed monkeys that piqui wrote only a while ago:

Iguazzu: Silver little fantasy master paint, master fantasy Big Silver paint
Piquifl & Arsies: Fantasy Master Gold supercreation
Arsies: Big fantasy Master Gold paint, painting Historical Gold Master
I would comment that these results are exceptional, only 4 golds in big paint fantasy master and only 3 in supercreation, keeping people with a high specific gravity in the scene out of gold.

Monte San Savino Show
Hola a todos. Este fin de semana estaré en Monte San savino en Italia con mis amigos Piquifl e Iguazzu. Ofreceré ademas a todo el que quiera venir una demostración de pintura con aerógrafo el sábado desde las 15.00 a las 17.00.
Además presentaré a concurso 4 miniaturas de fantasía de 30mm, 2 miniaturas de fantasía de 54-70mm, 3 miniaturas históricas de 54 mm, 1 busto histórico y 2 colaboraciones de fantasía con Piquifl. Espero que os guste!
