Some interesting questions. (II)

Hasta ahora he usado fiso (celo) y blue-tack..

I receive many questions throught blog, facebook or email quite interesting, I thought of compiling them and go occasionally publish a summary of those that think may help others. These are the second ones, because of space issues I edited them a little to focus on the theme, you can see the first ones  HERE:

QUESTION: I want to improve. Take a miniature and work on it days or weeks, what is needed. I think better way to do because painting squads is maybe not the best... Can you tell me an easy miniature to start with? As I readed best could be a 54mm.

ANSWER: I think there is a great minaiture to start, it's burned because everyone has painted it before, but you should think that you never did (I hope) and you are only working against yourself.
Miniature is Enigma's Yarri, a 54mm hobbit with a head as big as a truck, easy, well sculpted and it has a little of everything. Another option is the Latorre model's Numbrurian, so easy too.

Q: I want to buy a brand new brushes pack . Wich ones do you reccomend me?

A: I reccomend you the Windsor & Newton, serie 7 (not miniature's serie 7, those ones have the hair so small and can't handle so much paint), with numbers 1 & 2 should be enought, number 0 &1 have more or less the same point, so it's no need to pay 10 extra € for number 0, but if you want a precision brush for some punctual things a number 0 from miniature's series could be an option.

Q: I'm starting with cold colours and I want to know what colours I can use to paint stones with snow. I thought to use purple and blue tones. I'm right? some specific colour?

A: Saturated color in red and yellow are not the best option, but all greys and blues or unsaturated colours (even reds and yellows) will work fine.

Q: I'm working with snow. How do you use it? Do you have any special care about? and the last one.. Do you know how to do iciles or stalagtites?

A: I use snow with glossy varnish and once it's dry I turn it off a little with airbrush using inks with so many water, usually blue and black because snow's white is too pure.

Icicles are done with fishing line or optical fiber, glue them as guide and then add watter effects (this one that is dense) to make the form. You can use pigment-binder from mig too (it's sold to make mud, but you can use it without pigments)

Q: I want to ask you about artificial water. I want to know what should I use as limit or dam. Until now I used blu-tak and adhesive tape but alwyas some blutack keeps in the deep and it's horrible. Can you say me what do you use or reccomend me some tips?

A: I only use adhesive tap to do the dam, blutack keeps on the deep and it's so unconfortable to use. Massive Voodoo have a good tutorial:

Do a couple of test before, The tip is to put the adhesive tap all around the base strongly. You can avoid the filtered waiting a little before tip out the water on the base to let it thicken a little. I do not wait anything in the south of spain because there is a very hot weather, in fact 2k water effects (same as massive's one) becomes dry in 1.30 hours here, but it's better to wait 6-8 hours to remove the dam. This water is a little yellow.
Andrea's water is more liquid that 2k so it can filter a little, let it dry around 30-45 minutes before tip out. You should make your own test if you use another brand of water

Once dry you can remove the dam, clean and sand it a little to remove the glue and paint it with a glossy varnish coat. Should be perfect.
